One of the most fun and rewarding things I get to do is to be mom to my daughters. I love watching what excites them, what they are learning, and how they see the world. They teach me more about myself and my community than I could learn without these fantastic girls. I’m so proud of who they are both becoming as they grow up.
Of course, this Mother’s Day, I think of all of the things that can be done to support parenting within Fairfax County. Paid leave is necessary for parents to be home with small children and to support family members who become ill. Early childhood education supports kids by breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty and preparing them for kindergarten – and it also lifts some of the burden of childcare costs for families. Affordable housing allows parents to live within Fairfax County, which means shorter commutes, and more time with family. And, of course, we need to do everything we can to support our teachers so that they may thrive while providing a strong educational foundation for our children.
We need policies that support families here in Fairfax, to encourage stability and long-term growth for our community. I get a special view into our community both as the only mother running, and as the president of my daughters’ PTA. I’m so grateful for the ability to see what our work will do firsthand!
To all the moms, mamas, aunties, sisters, friends, grandmothers, abuelas, and those who fill this special role in our lives, have a wonderful Mother’s Day. We are grateful for you.
